Essays from Tahzib-ul-Akhlaq

In 1870 Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, back from England, founded Tahzib-ul-Akhlaq ('The Refinement of Morals'), the journal that launched the Aligarh movement and gave Urdu its modern prose. These are his essays from its pages: on custom and prejudice, flattery and hypocrisy, laziness and argument, the rights of women and the upbringing of children, hope, the past, the mirage of life, and the allegory 'The Story of Adam'. Plain, urgent, often funny, they are the voice of a man trying to wake a defeated community after 1857. Urdu text with a facing English translation; the first two pieces are free to read.
