About Urdu in Translation: how we publish and translate

ہمارے بارے میں

Urdu in Translation publishes Urdu literature in the original, with translations into the six official languages of the United Nations.

Run by Asghar Bashir. About the translator

What we publish

Classic and modern Urdu novels, stories, essays and poetry, each in the original Urdu with translations into Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. Every book can also be read in Roman Urdu and Hindi script, and most chapters can be heard as audio.

How our translations are made

Unless a book page says otherwise, our translations are made with the help of AI. Review and editing vary by title, and every book page names who made its translation. The Urdu original is always shown beside the translation, line by line, so any reader can check it.

Where our texts come from

The classics on the site are out of copyright. Modern works are published with the permission of their authors or under licence from their publishers.

Free to read

The first two chapters of every book are free. A membership unlocks every chapter without ads and pays for the translation of new books.

Corrections

If you find a mistake in a text or a translation, please tell us through the contact page. We read every message and correct the text.

Learning Urdu

Alongside the library we offer a Beginning Urdu course for beginners and heritage learners, and free reading guides to the books, writers and forms of Urdu literature.
