What Is a Dastan? Urdu Romance, Magic and Storytelling

داستان

Updated

The dastan (داستان) is the great romance of Urdu: an endless tale of princes and princesses, jinns and fairies, enchanted worlds and clever tricksters, told aloud by professional storytellers, the dastango, in the courts, markets and coffee houses of Delhi and Lucknow. Before the novel, the dastan was Urdu fiction.

Two classics of the form can be read here with a facing English translation: Bagh-o-Bahar and Baital Pachisi.

The world of the dastan

A dastan is built for performance: episodes that can go on night after night, cliff-hangers, set pieces of battle and beauty, and lavish descriptions. Its stock figures include the hero prince, the beloved princess, the sorcerer, the ayyar (trickster-spy) and the tilism, an enchanted world that must be conquered and broken.

The great dastans

Dastan-e-Amir Hamza, the adventures of the Prophet's uncle Hamza and his trickster companion Amar Ayyar, grew over centuries; the Naval Kishore Press of Lucknow printed it in forty-six volumes between 1883 and 1917. Its most famous part, Tilism-e-Hoshruba, has been translated into English by Musharraf Ali Farooqi.

Bagh-o-Bahar (1803), Mir Amman's tale of the four dervishes, and Baital Pachisi (1803), Vila's twenty-five riddle tales of King Vikram, were written at Fort William College in Calcutta in plain, spoken Urdu. Fasana-e-Ajaib by Rajab Ali Beg Suroor answered them from Lucknow in deliberately ornate prose.

The dastan today

The last great dastango of the old tradition, Mir Baqar Ali, died in 1928, and the novels of Nazir Ahmad and Premchand took the dastan's place. But the art of dastangoi was revived in the early 2000s by Mahmood Farooqui and others, and performances now draw new audiences in India and Pakistan.
