کارگاہِ سخن

From filling a single rhyme to a whole ghazal. Every answer is judged by the metre engine, so any line that truly scans counts, not only the poet's.

Qafia and radif

Fill the rhyme slot so the line rhymes and scans.

Fill the gap in the second misra with a word that rhymes (qafia) and keeps the metre (Hazaj musamman sālim). The radif is “nikle”; the other qafia in this ghazal is “dam”.

ہزاروں خواہشیں ایسی کہ ہر خواہش پہ دم نکلے
hazaaroñ khvaahisheñ aisii ki har khvaahish pe dam nikle
bahut nikle mire armaan lekin phir bhii ? nikle

Prose to metre

Arrange word tiles, or bring your own sentence into a bahr.

These are the words of a misra in Hazaj musamman sālim (mafā'īlun mafā'īlun mafā'īlun mafā'īlun). Tap them in an order that scans. Any order the engine accepts counts, not only the poet's.

your line

Your own sentence

Write a thought in plain Urdu (Roman or Urdu script) and pick a bahr. The engine shows where it breaks and which rearrangements, short forms or synonyms bring it into metre.

Fix the broken line

A real misra with one word changed: repair it.

This misra should be in Hazaj musamman sālim (mafā'īlun mafā'īlun mafā'īlun mafā'īlun) but one word was changed and it broke. Edit it until the engine accepts it.

ha·zaa·roñkhaa·hi·sheñai·siikiharta·man·naapedamnik·le

Break (kast-e-bahr) at “tamannaa”, syllable “ta”: the metre needs a long (=) here but this syllable is short (-).

Suggestions for Hazaj musamman sālim

Variant forms and close synonyms
  • hazaaroñ khvaahisheñ aisii ki har khvaahish pe dam nikle (tamannaa → khvaahish, wish, longing) scans
  • hazaaroñ khvaahisheñ aisii ki har hasrat pe dam nikle (tamannaa → hasrat, wish, longing) scans

At “tamannaa” the bahr needs a word weighing = =, for example khvaahish, hasrat.

Write a ghazal

Bahr, radif and qafia chosen; every line checked as you write.

fā'ilātun / fa'ilātun mafā'ilun fa'ilun / fa'lun

The rhyme sound every sher will repeat.

A ghazal needs at least five shers. The matla rhymes in both lines; after that only the second line of each sher carries the qafia and radif. Your draft is saved in this browser.
