Reading verse aloud (taffuz)

Level 1: Foundations of Urdu Poetics · about 12 minutes

Urdu is written right to left in the Nastaliq style. Long vowels are written (ا و ی ے), but short vowels (a, i, u) usually are not, which is why a poem must be read with the ear as well as the eye.

The Roman scheme used in this course

SoundWrite it asExample
long vowelsaa ii uu e o ai aunaadaañ, dil, duur, mere, ko, hai, aur
short vowelsa i udard, dil, dukh
nasalisation (noon-e-ghunna)ñ (or a capital N)meñ, haiñ, kahaañ
'ain or hamza'ma'luum, jaa'e
izafat and va-e -odil-e-naadaañ, sang-o-khisht
retroflex consonantsT D RuThnaa, buuTaa, nichoR

A final -a, -i or -u is always read long (kyaa, hii), so you may write kya or hi at the end of a word.

Four things that change the sound of a line

  • Izafat (-e) joins two words: dil-e-naadaañ is read di-le-naa-daañ, with the l carried over to the e.
  • Do-chashmi he (ھ) is breath, not a letter: bh, ph, th, kh, gh, chh are each one consonant.
  • Noon-e-ghunna (ں) only colours the vowel: meñ, haiñ, kahaañ.
  • 'Ain and hamza are real consonants for the metre: ma'luum is ma'-luum.
