About this book
Nazeer Akbarabadi (c. 1735–1830) of Agra wrote not for the court but for the bazaar, and the bazaar has never stopped singing him. While his contemporaries polished the ghazal, he made long, refrained poems out of everything the street knew: the Banjara trader whose pomp death loads away, bread and money and flattery, poverty that buries the dead without a shroud, the rains and the winter, and the festivals of every faith in India, Holi, Diwali, Rakhi, Eid, Shab-e-Barat and Guru Nanak. This selection of twenty-two nazms follows the HEC BS-Urdu course, from "Banjara Nama" and "Aadmi Nama" to "Barsat ki Baharen". A few bawdy stanzas are left out (each omission is listed in the book's notes). Urdu text with a facing English translation, stanza by stanza; the first chapter is free to read.
