About this book
Muhammad Iqbal (1877–1938), the poet-philosopher of Sialkot and Lahore, wrote the songs that South Asia still sings — "Better than all the world is our Hindustan", "My prayer comes to my lips as a longing" — and then the poems that argued with God and answered back: Shikwa (The Complaint) and Jawab-e-Shikwa (The Answer). His later Urdu book, Bal-e-Jibril (Gabriel's Wing, 1935), turns the ghazal and the nazm towards selfhood (khudi), love and action, and stands in the Mosque of Cordoba to ask what outlasts time. This selection follows the HEC BS-Urdu Iqbal course: early nazms and ghazals of Bang-e-Dara (1924), the elegy for his mother, Shikwa, Jawab-e-Shikwa and Tulu-e-Islam, then ghazals and nazms of Bal-e-Jibril. Urdu text with a facing English translation, couplet by couplet; the first chapter is free to read.
