Research essays

Editing the Text compares editions of important classic Urdu texts and shows what is at stake in establishing a reliable text. Style and the Stylist asks what literary style is. The title essay, The Mythological Discourses of the Modern Nazm, traces how myth, from the Vedas and the Mahabharata to Greek and Semitic legend, runs through modern Urdu free verse.

Close readings

Two essays take apart contemporary poems that announce their subject in the title: Rafiq Sandelvi's In Your Mythology and Iqtidar Javed's Mythology. They show how present-day poets use myth not as decoration but as a way of thinking about the self and the age.

Reviews

The shorter pieces survey new writing: the ghazals of Abid Khurshid, the poetry of Aamir Abdullah and Junaid Milli, criticism by Alamdar Hussain Bukhari, Bano Qudsia's novel Raja Gidh, the novels of Ghafir Shahzad and Ijaz Roshan, and finally the preface of Iqbal's forgotten book on economics, Ilm-ul-Iqtisad.

For readers outside Pakistan the book is a rare English-language window onto current Urdu criticism. Learn more about Sajid Ali Ameer.
