Yusuf and Zulaykha meeting, c. 1764

ہزاروں خواہشیں ایسی کہ ہر خواہش پہ دم نکلےبہت نکلے مرے ارمان، لیکن پھر بھی کم نکلے

hazaaroñ KHvaahisheñ aisii ki har KHvaahish pe dam niklebahut nikle mire armaan, lekin phir bhii kam nikle

Mil deseos, y por cada uno valdría la pena morir;muchos de mis anhelos se cumplieron, y aun así fueron pocos.

Comentario (sharh)

The whole sher turns on the verb nikalna, used in two idioms: dam nikalna (the breath goes out, one dies) and armaan nikalna (a longing comes out, is fulfilled). Each desire is so intense that the poet could die for it, so even after many are granted the account still feels short. This double use of one word is a form of ihaam, and the matla sets up the radif nikle with the qafia dam / kam.
