Ghalib, do not make your letter so long; write briefly,for I am one who longs to tell the cruelties of separation.

• آساں کہنے کی کرتے ہیں فرمائشask me to say something easy:
• بھیجی ہے جو مجھ کو شاہِ جم جاہ نے دالThe dal (lentils) the King of Jamshid's rank has sent me
• ہیں شہ میں صفاتِ ذوالجلالی باہمIn the King the attributes of the Lord of Majesty are joined,
• نقش فریادی ہے کس کی شوخیِ تحریر کاAgainst whose playful pen does the picture plead?
• بس کہ ہوں غالبؔ، اسیری میں بھی آتش زیرِ پاGhalib, even in chains my feet are on fire:
