About This Edition

This book gives the Urdu text and a new English translation of sixteen poems by Maulana Zafar Ali Khan (1873–1956) and of a short prose play, *Editor ka Hashr* ("The Editor's Fate"), which Urdu Wikisource attributes to him. The poems are grouped in two chapters: poems of India and freedom, and poems of faith, fellowship and letters. The title, *Zafar Ali Khan ki Nazmen* ("Poems of Zafar Ali Khan"), has been given to this selection by the present edition.

Source of the Urdu text: Urdu Wikisource (ur.wikisource.org), the seventeen pages listed under the author, downloaded in October 2026 and marked {{PD-Pakistan}}. The page "The Confluence" (*Sangam*) has only five lines, the last without its partner; it is printed as found.

What is left out and what was changed: the play on Wikisource is followed by a short note, signed by Muhammad al-Wahidi, editor of *Nizam-ul-Mashaikh*, Delhi, and dated 25 October 1913, which appeals to the Viceroy, Lord Hardinge, to repeal the Press Act. The note is by another hand and is omitted here. It also says that the story "is not original", which suggests that the play is adapted from an earlier tale. Nothing else has been left out. The poems are given under the titles of the source pages; the order within each chapter is the present edition's.

Copyright: Zafar Ali Khan died in 1956, so his work is in the public domain in Pakistan and India. The English translation is new. Translator's notes are marked [TN: …]. The translation keeps each line of verse as a line, and puts accuracy before rhyme. Persian verse quoted in the play is translated, with a note.

Names are spelled in one way throughout: Lahore, Delhi, Ballimaran, Calcutta, Cawnpore, Prayag, Hoshiarpur; the Ganga, the Jamna, the Hooghly; Krishna, Arjun, Bhim; Abu Bakr, Umar, Usman, Ali; Naziri, Urfi, Mani; King George the Fifth.

Introduction

Zafar Ali Khan was born in 1873 near Wazirabad in the Punjab and educated at Aligarh. After some years in the service of Hyderabad State he took over *Zamindar*, the Lahore newspaper his father had founded, and made it one of the most widely read and most often punished papers in India. Under the Press Act of 1910 the government repeatedly demanded and forfeited its securities, closed its press and sent its editor to prison. He was a leader in the Khilafat movement, later a member of the legislature, and in the 1930s founded the Majlis-e-Ittehad-e-Millat, whose blue-shirted volunteers appear in two poems here. He is remembered as the father of Urdu journalism and as one of the quickest and most combative poets of his age. He died at Wazirabad in 1956.

His poetry was written for the newspaper and the public meeting. It is political, topical and direct: "Britain has started a war with India, though a war with India is a war with the whole world." The poems here include his love for India in "India" and "Swaraj"; the revolutionary hope of "The Revolution of India" and "The Flame in the Lantern of India"; the duty of Muslims to court prison in "Duty and Debt"; and the journeys to Cawnpore and Calcutta of the 1930s. Beside them are a hymn, a poem in praise of the Prophet and his four companions, and two poems on Krishna: "Love", which honours him and reaches out to Hindus, and "Janmashtami", which honours him but jabs at those of his worshippers who stir up strife. "An Address to the Poets of the Age" tells the ghazal poets to leave the beloved's tresses for the hungry poor; "An Inquiry into the Word Cho" is a comic quarrel about a Punjabi word, ending in a lament for the decline of Persian.

"The Editor's Fate" is a comedy in three short acts set in 1913. Nazli Begum, educated in England, must choose between a rich member of the Viceroy's Council and a poor poet who edits an Urdu newspaper. She chooses the poet, and in a dream sees herself eight years later in a rented room in Delhi with four children, after the government has taken a security of two and a half thousand rupees under the Press Act. Waking, she chooses the rich man. The play was published in *Nizam-ul-Mashaikh*, Delhi, in October 1913, when *Zamindar* itself had just lost its security; its subject is the editor's own life.
