This book gives the complete Urdu text and a new English translation of *Shagufa-e-Mohabbat* ("The Blossom of Love") by Mirza Rajab Ali Beg Suroor of Lucknow, the author of *Fasana-e-Aja'ib*. It is a prose *dastan* (romance) of kings, fairies, sorcerers and *devs*, written in the rhymed, ornate prose for which Suroor is famous.
Source of the Urdu text: Urdu Wikisource (ur.wikisource.org), the page شگوفۂ محبت and its fourteen section pages, downloaded in October 2026. The Wikisource note on the work says that Suroor wrote it about a quarter of a century after *Fasana-e-Aja'ib*, in the reign of Wajid Ali Shah, at the request of Amjad Ali Khan of Sandila, and that it is based on Mehr Chand Mehr's tale *Nau Aain-e-Hindi*. The author's closing note is dated Sha'ban 1272 AH (1856) and says that the book was printed through the care of Maulvi Muhammad Yaqub.
What is left out and what was changed: every part of the author's text is given, in his order, including his praise of the king, his account of why he wrote the book, and his closing note about the printing. The section titles are the author's own. Some short sections have been grouped into one chapter. The verse lines, which the online text sets one per line, have been paired into couplets, the verse markers have been removed, and some very long paragraphs have been divided. Nothing modern has been added to the Urdu.
Copyright: the book was written in the 1840s or 1850s and printed by 1856, and the author died in the 1860s, long before 1961. The text is therefore in the public domain in Pakistan, India and the United States. The English translation is new. Translator's notes are marked [TN: …]. Persian, Arabic and Hindi verses and phrases are translated, with the language named in square brackets.
Names are given in one spelling throughout: Azar Shah, Saman Rukh, Zalala, Asad Ali Shah, Ijaz Shah, Prince Jahan Ara, the fairy Mehr Jamal, Mah Rukh, Sehr Saz, Sarv-e-Naz, Zamurrad Koh, Firoz Koh, Mount Qaf, Lucknow. Urdu, Persian and Hindi terms kept in the English are printed in italics, explained where they first appear, and listed in the glossary at the end of the book.

Introduction
*Shagufa-e-Mohabbat* is a tale within a tale. Azar Shah, a king of Hindustan who has no son, goes out in distress and meets a holy man on a mountain, Asad Ali Shah of Ajmer. By his blessing the king marries Saman Rukh, the daughter of the Khaqan of China, and she conceives; but through the jealousy of the first queen, Zalala, she goes mad, and no physician can cure her. The holy man is found again, and while he keeps a forty-day retreat his disciple Ijaz Shah tells a long story to the distracted princess.
That inner story makes up most of the book. Prince Jahan Ara of Khurasan falls in love with the fairy princess Mehr Jamal. He is turned into a pigeon and a deer, thrown into a well, and rescued by sorcerers, before he is taken to Fairyland and married to the fairy. Then the Sultan of Firoz Koh, whose son was betrothed to her, makes war on the king of Qaf for giving a fairy to a man, and the prince meets the fairy-born champion in single combat. When the story ends, Saman Rukh recovers, a son is born to Azar Shah, and the city celebrates.
Suroor wrote the book in Lucknow for the court of Wajid Ali Shah, whom he praises at the start as Sultan-e-Alam. By the time it was printed, the kingdom of Oudh had been annexed, and in his closing pages Suroor describes the city's distress, reflects on faithless friends and the passing of kings, and thanks Maulvi Muhammad Yaqub for having the book printed. The book has the same delight in wordplay, rhyme and verse as *Fasana-e-Aja'ib*, and many puns have been explained in the notes.
