About This Edition

اس اشاعت کے بارے میں

This book gives the Urdu text and a new English translation of all thirteen essays by Mehdi Afadi (Mehdi Hasan, died 1921) found on Urdu Wikisource: "The Dream of Childhood and the Longing of Youth", "The First Teacher of History in the Land", "Half an Hour with Allama Shibli", "The Five Elements of Urdu Literature", "Tamaddun-e-Arab and Professor Shibli", "The Philosophy of Beauty and Love (from the Greek Point of View)", "The Last Breath of Urdu Literature", "The Literary Services of the Nami Press, Cawnpore", "An Unflattering Word on Naqqad", "A Philosophical Look at Shi'r-ul-Ajam", "Allama Shibli's Monthly Learned Journal", "The Rivalry of Hali and Shibli" and "An Open Letter on Tamaddun-e-Arab". His essays were gathered after his death under the title *Ifadat-e-Mehdi* ("The Benefits of Mehdi"). Printed editions of that collection may contain further pieces that are not on Wikisource and are not in this volume.

Source of the Urdu text: Urdu Wikisource (ur.wikisource.org), the essays listed under the author, downloaded in October 2026 and marked {{PD-old}}. Wikisource gives thirteen essays, and all thirteen are translated here: the first seven (chapters 2–8) in the first edition of this book, the other six (chapters 9–14) added in October 2026. Wikisource does not say from which printing of *Ifadat-e-Mehdi* the texts were taken.

What is left out and what was changed: nothing has been left out of the essays that are given, and the source pages carry no modern editorial matter. Paragraphs follow the source. A few misprints have been corrected in "The Dream of Childhood": *Azra waqai* for *uzr aur waqai*, *kash Azra* for *kash uzar*, and *kisi aur* for *kisi wur*. In "Half an Hour with Allama Shibli" one sentence breaks off in the source, and the missing words are supplied from the sense in a note. Mehdi's own footnotes to "The Rivalry of Hali and Shibli", with two notes by the compiler of the collection, are translated at the end of that essay.

Copyright: Mehdi Afadi died in 1921, so these essays are in the public domain in Pakistan and India. Persian quotations are translated, with a note that the original is Persian.

Introduction

تعارف

Mehdi Afadi, whose name was Mehdi Hasan, came from the district of Gorakhpur in the United Provinces and spent his working life in government service there. He had no university career and held no literary post, yet he became one of the most admired prose stylists of his generation. He wrote for the leading Urdu journals of the early twentieth century, and his letters and essays were read for their manner as much as for their matter. He died in 1921, and his writings were collected after his death.

Mehdi was above all a devoted reader and lover of Shibli Nomani, the historian and critic of Aligarh and Nadwa, and three of the essays here are about him. "The First Teacher of History in the Land" praises Shibli as the first Urdu writer to treat Islamic history and theology on modern critical lines, with special attention to his *Al-Kalam*; "Half an Hour with Allama Shibli" is a review of his *Life of Maulana Rumi* and of the first parts of his history of Persian poetry, *Shi'r-ul-Ajam*; and "Tamaddun-e-Arab and Professor Shibli" quotes Shibli's praise of Sayyid Ali Bilgrami's Urdu translation of Gustave Le Bon's book on Arab civilisation, and greets the appearance of Shibli's life of the Caliph Umar, *Al-Faruq*.

"The Five Elements of Urdu Literature" is his best-known essay. In it he names Sir Syed, Azad, Nazir Ahmad, Hali and Shibli as the five makers of modern Urdu prose and weighs each in turn; the phrase *anasir-e-khamsa*, the five elements, has been used of these five writers ever since. "The Last Breath of Urdu Literature", written a few years after Shibli's death in 1914, is its sad sequel: the age of great authorship, he says, is over, and he calls for a comprehensive dictionary, a record of idioms, technical terms and an encyclopaedia before anything else.

The other two essays show the romantic side of his style. "The Dream of Childhood and the Longing of Youth" is an ecstatic portrait of an ideal woman, Azra, and "The Philosophy of Beauty and Love" surveys what the Greek philosophers said of beauty and love. Mehdi's prose is ornate, full of Persian and English words, sudden asides and playful images; the translation tries to keep its colour while making its long sentences readable in English.

The six essays added in chapters 9–14 show Mehdi as a fighter for his friends and his taste. "The Literary Services of the Nami Press, Cawnpore" praises the fine lithographed books of Munshi Rahmatullah Ra'd and scolds Aligarh for giving its works to cheap presses. "An Unflattering Word on Naqqad" answers the critics who called his "Philosophy of Beauty and Love" indecent, and "A Philosophical Look at Shi'r-ul-Ajam" answers a reviewer, Aslam, who had attacked Shibli's history of Persian poetry. "Allama Shibli's Monthly Learned Journal" mourns the Aligarh journal *Ma'arif*, mocks the Educational Conference and welcomes Shibli's *Al-Nadwa*. "The Rivalry of Hali and Shibli", built from letters, reviews and prefaces, shows the two friends sparring over biography, above all over Hali's life of Sir Syed, *Hayat-e-Javed*; and "An Open Letter on Tamaddun-e-Arab" defends Sayyid Ali Bilgrami's translation against an editor who had condemned it unread. These pieces are sharp and sometimes rude; the translation keeps their tone.
