It is the rainy season, the month of Sawan; golden clouds cover the sky. Every little while a light drizzle begins to fall. It is only the third watch of the day, but it seems as if evening has come. In the mango orchard a swing has been hung. The girls are swinging, and their mothers too. Two or four are on the swing; two or four stand waiting their turn. One is singing a kajri, one a song of the twelve months. This season brings childhood back fresh to the hearts of women. These showers seem to wash the cares out of the heart. Every heart is full of longing. The pale green saris seem to take their colour from the greenness of hope.
Just then a pedlar came and stood by the swing. The moment they saw him the swing stopped. Big and small, they all came and gathered round him. The pedlar opened his box and began taking out glittering, dangling things to show them. There were ornaments of false pearls, cheap lace and tinsel, coloured stockings, pretty dolls, tops and rattles for children, bugles and whistles of every kind. Each began picking out the things she liked. One girl with great big eyes chose the thing that stood out most among all those glittering things. It was a chandan-haar, a necklace, of turquoise colour.
The mother asked the pedlar: "How much is this necklace?"
The pedlar, wiping the necklace with his handkerchief, said: "It cost me twenty annas. Give what you please."
The mother said: "That is very dear. In four days its shine will be gone."
The pedlar shook his head meaningfully and said: "Bahu Ji! In four days the little daughter will have a real chandan-haar."
Those sympathetic words struck the mother's heart. The necklace was bought.
There was no end to the simple girl's joy. Perhaps a necklace of diamonds would not have made her so happy. Wearing it she danced about the whole village. Of everything she owned, the most precious and the dearest was that necklace of glass.
The girl's name was Jalpa, and her mother's was Manki.
