Life1735–1830
Wali Muhammad, who wrote as Nazeer, was born in Delhi and lived most of his long life in Agra (Akbarabad), where he worked as a teacher. He kept away from courts and patrons.
He is the poet of ordinary people: his nazms celebrate fairs, festivals of every faith, kites, bread, poverty and old age in the living speech of the bazaar. Long neglected by the critics, he is now loved as the most humane of the classical poets.
