Life1865–1933

Khwaja Nasir Nazir Firaq Dehlavi was born in Delhi, into a family descended from Khwaja Mir Dard. He wrote poetry and prose and was one of the chroniclers of the old city before its world disappeared.

His sketches of Delhi life, its fairs, gardens, customs and characters, preserve the speech and manners of the Mughal capital and are read today as a record of a lost culture.

A Sufi saint's blessing on Timur leads to the building of Shah Jahan's new city; a young wife writes to her sister about a Delhi wedding in the women's own idiom; court storytellers trade jokes before Bahadur Shah; a king's favourite dancing girl meets her match in a clever minister; a forgotten fakir by the moat of the Red Fort prophesies its fall; a governor under Aurangzeb wins favour with a single Persian couplet; a morning walk in 1925 turns into a lament for the bounty of the old court; and a poor goldsmith's family wastes three wishes granted by a hermit.
