Urdu Numbers 1 to 100: Counting in Urdu with Roman Urdu
اردو گنتی
Updated
Counting in Urdu takes some memory work: from 11 to 99 every number is its own word, and the patterns are only partly regular. The good news is that the numbers you use most, for prices, times and ages, come back again and again. Here is the complete list from 0 to 100, followed by the big numbers, ordinals and fractions, all as taught in our Beginning Urdu course.
0 to 100
Learn them in groups of ten. Look for the pattern inside each group: the 20s mostly end in -iis, the 30s in -tiis, the 40s in -taaliis and so on, and every number ending in 9 is "one less than" the next ten: untiis (29) is one less than tiis (30). Some numbers in the 70s to 90s have more than one accepted pronunciation; this list gives one common form.

Hundreds, thousands, lakh and crore
South Asia counts large numbers in lakhs and crores, not millions: a laakh is 100,000 and a karoR is 10,000,000. Prices and salaries are written that way too: 2,00,000 is do laakh.
| Number | Urdu | Roman Urdu |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | سو | sau |
| 200 | دو سو | do sau |
| 1,000 | ہزار | hazaar |
| 100,000 | لاکھ | laakh |
| 10,000,000 | کروڑ | karoR |
| 1,000,000,000 | ارب | arab |
First, second, third
Ordinals change like adjectives: pahlaa before a masculine noun, pahlii before a feminine one. From fifth onwards they end in -waañ.
| English | Urdu | Roman Urdu |
|---|---|---|
| first | پہلا / پہلی | pahlaa / pahlii |
| second | دوسرا / دوسری | dusraa / dusrii |
| third | تیسرا / تیسری | tiisraa / tiisrii |
| fourth | چوتھا / چوتھی | chauthaa / chauthii |
| fifth | پانچواں / پانچویں | paañchwaañ / paañchwiiñ |
| sixth | چھٹا / چھٹی | chhaTaa / chhaTii |
| seventh | ساتواں / ساتویں | saatwaañ / saatwiiñ |
| eighth | آٹھواں / آٹھویں | aaThwaañ / aaThwiiñ |

| tenth | دسواں / دسویں | daswaañ / daswiiñ |
| last | آخری | aaKHirii |
Half, one and a half, two and a half
Urdu has single words for the fractions you use when telling the time and shopping. DeRh is one and a half, Dhaa.ii two and a half; from three upwards, saaRhe means "and a half": saaRhe tiin is three and a half, saaRhe tiin baje half past three.
| English | Urdu | Roman Urdu |
|---|---|---|
| half | آدھا | aadhaa |
| three quarters | پون | paun |
| one and a quarter | سوا | sawaa |
