Life1895–1941
Mirza Azim Beg Chughtai was born in Agra, the elder brother of the novelist Ismat Chughtai. He trained in law and worked in the service of the state of Jodhpur, and wrote through years of illness.
He is one of the great humorists of Urdu prose. His stories and sketches, such as those in Khanum and Shrimati Ji, find comedy in household life, schoolboys and the clash of old and new manners.
