Life1844–1917

Muhammad Ismail Merathi was born in Meerut and worked as a teacher and in education departments across northern India. He is remembered as the poet of Urdu childhood: his readers and school books taught generations of children to read.

His short nazms on nature, animals, work and good conduct are simple, musical and exact, and he was among the first to write Urdu poems without rhyme. Lines of his are still recited in schools in Pakistan and India.
