Life1880–1943
Syed Sajjad Haidar Yildirim was born in Nehtaur, near Bijnor, studied at Aligarh, and served as a dragoman in the British consulate in Baghdad and later in Turkey, which gave him his pen name and his love of Turkish literature.
He brought Turkish stories into Urdu and wrote romantic stories and sketches of his own, collected as Khayalistan, that helped to found the modern Urdu short story. He was later registrar of Aligarh Muslim University.
