About This Edition
This book gives the Urdu text and a new English translation of ten short prose pieces by Sajjad Haidar Yildirim (1880–1943): stories, sketches and humorous essays. They are taken from the pieces published under his name on Urdu Wikisource. The title, *Yildirim ke Afsane* ("Yildirim's Stories"), belongs to this edition; it is not the title of any book by the author.
Source of the Urdu text: Urdu Wikisource (ur.wikisource.org), the author's page مصنف:سجاد حیدر یلدرم, eleven pages, downloaded in October 2026. No scan of an early printing has been found on archive.org. Wikisource gives no dates or first printings for these pieces.
What is left out and what was changed: nothing of the author's text has been left out. "A Friend's Letter" and "Exile and Home", both short, share chapter 2; "The Second Marriage" is printed in two chapters. At the end of "Ill-Matched Company" Wikisource adds a source note, "from *Khayalistan*"; it is mentioned here and not printed in the text. "Save Me from My Friends" ends with the word "(Abridged)", which shows that the Wikisource text is shortened; it is kept as it stands. "Gulistan" breaks off without an ending in the source. Obvious misprints have been read in the sense the context requires, and doubtful readings are marked with a translator's note.
Copyright: Yildirim died in 1943, so his work is in the public domain in Pakistan and India. The letters in "Ill-Matched Company" and "The Reply" are dated 1925, and the first publication dates of the other pieces are not known, so this edition records its United States status as "check". The English translation is new. Translator's notes are marked [TN: …].

Introduction
Sajjad Haidar Yildirim was born in Banaras in 1880 and educated at the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College at Aligarh. As a student he learnt Turkish, and he took as his pen name *Yildirim*, the Turkish word for "thunderbolt". He served in the British consular service in Baghdad and Constantinople, and later returned to Aligarh, where he became the first Registrar of the Muslim University founded there in 1920. He died in 1943. His daughter, Qurratulain Hyder, became one of the great novelists of Urdu.
Yildirim is remembered as one of the first writers of the short story in Urdu, and as the leader of its "romantic" school. Where his elders, Nazir Ahmad and Hali, wrote to reform and to instruct, Yildirim wrote about feeling: love, longing, beauty, the inner life of young men and women. Several of his stories were adapted from Turkish writers, and his collection *Khayalistan* ("The Land of Fancy") brought this new kind of prose to Urdu readers. His language is rich in Persian and Arabic words and fond of long, ornate sentences, while his dialogue can be quick and colloquial.
The ten pieces here show his range. "A Friend's Letter" is a playful address to a letter from a beloved friend. "Exile and Home" is a night of argument with oneself. "The Autobiography of Mr Heart" and "The Tale of the Sparrow and His Mate" let a heart and a sparrow speak, and turn their eyes on human folly. "Save Me from My Friends" is a comic essay on the friends who leave a writer no time to write. "The First Rush of Intoxication" and "Gulistan", the dreamlike tale of a girl kept from all knowledge of men on an island of flowers, are closest to the Turkish romances he admired.
The longer stories are about marriage, the great social question of his time. In "Love Marriage" a doctor tells how he married a Muslim lady doctor whom all Hyderabad slandered. In "The Second Marriage" a wife goes to the house of the courtesan who has taken her husband. "Ill-Matched Company" and "The Reply" are an exchange of letters between two school friends, both unhappily married: Azra, whose husband loves theatre songs and belches after dinner, and Salma, whose husband, an engineer trained in England, is perfectly polite and has nothing to say. Yildirim argues through Salma that a marriage should be made by matching temperaments, not only rank, money or education. The stories describe a world of new ideas about *purdah*, education and choice in marriage, and in them the women often speak with more force than the men.
