About This Edition

This book gives the Urdu text and a new English translation of forty-seven *ghazals* (lyric poems) by Mirza Hatim Ali Beg Mehr (d. 1879), the friend and correspondent of Ghalib. They are all the poems by Mehr on Urdu Wikisource. The title, *Mehr ka Kalam* ("Poems of Mehr"), has been given to this selection by the present edition.

Source of the Urdu text: Urdu Wikisource (ur.wikisource.org), the forty-seven pages listed under the author, downloaded in October 2026. The source pages carry no modern editorial matter. Where the source has an evident misprint or an obscure line, the text is printed as found and the translation follows the likeliest sense, with a note.

What is left out and what was changed: nothing has been left out. The ghazals are given in the order of the source, which is broadly alphabetical by first line, and are headed by their first line. Where the source repeats a line or a couplet, or gives two closing couplets, the repetition is kept and noted.

Copyright: Mehr died in 1879, so his poems are in the public domain everywhere. The English translation is new. Translator's notes are marked [TN: …]. The translation keeps each line of verse as a line, and puts accuracy before rhyme. The pen name Mehr is kept as a name; it means "sun" and also "love, kindness", and the poet often plays on both senses.

Names are spelled in one way throughout: Delhi, Agra, Chunar, Benares, Lucknow, Isfahan, Najd; Ghalib, Zauq, Hargopal Tafta, Shaikh Ali Hazin; Farhad, Shirin, Majnun; Khizr, Solomon, Moses, Jesus, Joseph, Gabriel; Kali, Durga, Hanuman, Ravana.

Introduction

Mirza Hatim Ali Beg, who wrote as Mehr, is remembered above all as one of the friends to whom Ghalib wrote his letters. Ghalib's letters to him are among the most affectionate and best known in Urdu, and they show Mehr as a poet whose verses Ghalib read and answered. He bore the title Mirza, used by men of Mughal descent, and his own poems name Agra, Chunar and Benares as places he knew and left behind: "Mehr, Agra is left behind, yet even in Chunar the eyes keep searching for the same lanes and bazaars." He died in 1879.

His ghazals belong to the playful, ingenious school of the mid-nineteenth century. One is written entirely in undotted letters; one repeats the same second line in every couplet; one carries a Persian refrain; one repeats each phrase four times over. He puns constantly on his pen name, the sun, and on his own name, Hatim, the byword for generosity. He is also unusually at home among Hindu images: the temple, the Brahmin's conch and sacred thread, the goddesses Kali and Durga, and a whole ghazal on Holi.

Beneath the wit there is real feeling, most of all for Benares, which he left and longed for: "Ever since fate parted me from Benares, only 'Alas, Benares!' stays on my tongue." He names the Persian poet Hazin, who also loved that city, and his fellow poet Tafta; and he ends many poems in the old lover's mood of loss and patience: "Hope of the rose-cheeked is cut off: Mehr, let it be the sight of the garden, then."
