Praise of God and the Reason for This Book

In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A thousand thanks to that God who gave man excellence over all His creation, adorned his head in religion and the world with the jewelled crown of reason, mounted him on the swift horse of natural wit and put the reins of wisdom in his hand, and entrusted him with the sword of knowledge for the governing of the kingdom of the heart, so that the life of his senses and understanding should not be trampled by the hand of the enemy Satan. And countless blessings on His Prophet, Ahmad the Chosen, and on his pure family.
O wise reader, take note! In Hind this book is called the *Hitopades*, that is, "Profitable Counsel", and it contains four chapters (*babs*). One tells of friendship; the second of the parting of friends; the third of such matters of war as bring victory to oneself and defeat to the enemy; the fourth of the nature of making peace, whether before a war or after it.
In short, tales are wrapped within tales so strange and wonderful that by reading and hearing them a man may become very wary and most shrewd in the business of the world; besides this, the good and bad doings of everyone will come before his eyes. So it was that this book reached the court of the King of Kings, Shah Nasir-ud-Din, whose seat of government was the province of Bihar.
When he heard that its stories were very entertaining, its counsels most pleasing, its sayings very fine and its fables mostly profitable, he turned to one of his servants and said: "Translate this into plain Persian, so that I may keep it for my reading and profit by its contents." Then one of them carried out the order and named it *Mufarrih-ul-Qulub* ("The Gladdener of Hearts"). Now this sinner, Mir Bahadur Ali Husaini, in the year eighteen hundred and two of the Christian era, corresponding to the year twelve hundred and seventeen of the Hijra, at the order of his lord and benefactor John Gilchrist Sahib Bahadur, may his fortune endure, has translated it from the Persian language into plain, current Rekhta (Urdu), which high and low speak, and has named it *Akhlaq-e-Hindi* ("Indian Morals"). Whoever acts on it, his heart and mind will be ever refreshed by the scent of reason, and, becoming acquainted with many words of wisdom, he will always be happy and content.
