Life1857–1914
Muhammad Shibli Nomani was born near Azamgarh. He taught Arabic and Persian at Aligarh for sixteen years, travelled in the Ottoman lands, led the Nadwatul Ulama in Lucknow, and founded the Dar-al-Musannifin in Azamgarh.
He wrote biographies of great figures of Islam, the five-volume Sher-ul-Ajam on Persian poetry, the comparison of Anis and Dabeer in Muwazana-e-Anis-o-Dabeer, and began the life of the Prophet, Seerat-un-Nabi, completed by his pupil Sulaiman Nadvi.
