Life1713–1781

Mirza Muhammad Rafi Sauda was born in Delhi and, with Mir Taqi Mir, stands at the head of eighteenth-century Urdu poetry. When Delhi declined he moved to Farrukhabad and then to Lucknow, where he died.

He wrote fine ghazals, but his fame rests on his qasidas, the most powerful in Urdu, and on his satires, which spare no one from rival poets to the decay of the Mughal state.
