Life1868–1921

Mahdi Hasan, known as Mehdi Afadi, was born in Gorakhpur and served in the government of Hyderabad. He was a friend and correspondent of the leading writers of his day and is remembered as one of the finest Urdu essayists of the early twentieth century.

His essays, collected in Ifadat-e-Mehdi, combine wide reading in Urdu, Persian and English with a graceful, witty prose style, and he wrote some of the first Urdu criticism to apply Western ideas to the classical tradition.
