Life1912–1949

Muhammad Sanaullah Dar, who wrote as Meeraji, was born in Lahore. With N. M. Rashid he led the turn of Urdu poetry towards free verse and the inner life, and he was a central figure of the Halqa-e-Arbab-e-Zauq in Lahore.

His poems draw on Hindu myth, Sanskrit and Western symbolism and explore desire and loneliness in a way new to Urdu. He also translated poets from many languages. He lived in poverty and died in Bombay at thirty-seven.
