Mustafa Khan Shefta

Ninety-seven poems by Nawab Mustafa Khan Shefta of Delhi (1809–1869), pupil of Momin, friend of Ghalib, mentor of Hali and the sternest critic of his age: ninety-five ghazals, a naat and a fragment on his own diwan, all his poems on Urdu Wikisource. Polished, ironic and conversational, they argue with the beloved, the messenger and the rival through refrains such as "when were you not", "for nothing" and "all night long", and include the famous couplet on the tales of love: "we do embellish them, to adorn the story".
