Mazhar Ali Khan Vila

The Twenty-Five Tales of the Vetal, told in Urdu by Mazhar Ali Khan Vila in 1803 at Fort William College, Calcutta. King Vikramaditya must carry a corpse that hangs in a tree to a scheming yogi, but the spirit inside it, the Baital, tells him a story on every journey and ends each with a riddle; if the king knows the answer and keeps silent, his head will burst, and if he speaks, the corpse flies back to its tree. One of the classics of early Urdu prose. Urdu text with a facing translation; the first two chapters are free to read.
