Life1882–1926
Pandit Brij Narain Chakbast was born in Faizabad to a Kashmiri Pandit family and grew up in Lucknow, where he practised as a lawyer. He wrote patriotic and reflective nazms in a polished, classical Urdu, and took part in the reform debates of his time.
His collection Subh-e-Watan gathers his poems on the homeland, on national leaders and on social questions. He also wrote criticism, and defended the Gulzar-e-Naseem of Pandit Dayashankar Naseem in a famous controversy with Abdul Halim Sharar. He died young, of a stroke, at Rae Bareli station.
