Tales of the Mutiny of 1857
I have written the history of the Mutiny of 1857 in Delhi in twelve parts, of which the first, Tears of the Begums, has been by far the most loved.
The book first appeared in a small format under the title Tales of the Delhi Mutiny. New stories were then added and it was reissued as Drops of Tears. More stories were added again, and it was given the name Tears of the Begums.
Ten editions have been printed so far.
Most men of letters in India hold that these pieces are the finest of my writings, and that they stand high in the art of Urdu prose.
It was on this account that my friend the Honourable Syed Ross Masood, grandson of Maulana Sir Syed Ahmad Khan Bahadur and known as Nawab Masood Jang Bahadur, asked me some years ago to bring out a special edition of these stories, with paper, printing, calligraphy and binding so fine that it might be called a library edition.
I made the arrangements as my friend wished. The book was written out and had already gone to the press when it struck me that the calligraphy was not of the first quality. Besides, it contained certain stories which my own heart did not accept as models of fine and moving Urdu prose. So I recalled the book from the press and destroyed it.
Then, when Syed Ross Masood was about to leave for Europe and I went to Aligarh to see him, he reminded me of his old request. The stories were chosen afresh. The long ones and the weaker ones were set aside, and a few that my heart too approved were arranged in a sequence, together with some entirely new pieces I had only recently written.
The collection has now become worthy enough to be given a place on some lower shelf of the Urdu library. (The full and complete stories are in the book Tears of the Begums; they are not all here.)
Before I close this preface it seems fitting to say to my appreciative friend Syed Ross Masood, grandson of Sir Syed, the deliverer of India through education: there, sir, your command has been obeyed. If the thing has turned out well, I offer it to you; if not, kindly mention its faults to no one, so that my heart is not broken.
In truth I prepared this book to write the lament of a dying civilisation and its history. What has an elegy to do with a library?
